Project History

Creating a case study from every project I have ever worked on would be insane and incredibly unhelpful.

Instead, here is a list of highlighted projects arranged roughly from newest to oldest. Open the panels for a short summary of the project and the work I did on them.

Prudential Retirement Services

DESCRIPTION

This feature was designed to allow employers the ability to upload non-Prudential benefits into a mother participant’s account, giving the participant a more robust view of their financial health.

CHALLENGES

  • Each sponsor has it’s own format, naming convention, and custom data sets.
  • Need to differentiate between total-value accounts and per-period accounts.
  • No UX contact w/ users permitted.

DESIGN PROCESS

RESEARCH

STRATEGY

DESIGN

Prototypes (Wireframes, Medium Fidelity), Accessibility, Use Established Design System

Description

This feature was designed to feed a company’s financial data to their intermediary data services.

Challenges

  • Each intermediary has its own file formatting
  • Multi-step processes mean that user must start, walk away until another party finishes their work, then return to complete the job

Design

Prototypes (Wireframes, Medium Fidelity), Accessibility, Use Established Design System

Description

This feature was designed to enable Sponsors to self-correct financial records in accordance with Federal laws.

Challenges

  • Most complex project I have ever worked on. Loved it.
  • Solution must allow customers to process various types of financial corrections.
  • Most correction types also had time-based components.
  • Each combination of correction and time has its own Federal guidelines on how to handle the correction.
  • No UX contact w/ users permitted.

Design

Wireframes (medium and high fidelity), Accessibility, Used Established Design System

Description

This was a complete overhaul of the Sponsor Center’s reporting features. Moving from simple Excel or PDF downloads to on-screen charting, key metrics highlighting, providing access to older report versions, and upgraded UX.

Challenges

  • Rushed timeline
  • Poor user experience
  • High visibility w/ lots of outside opinions
  • No UX contact w/ users permitted.

Design Audit

Description

This feature was designed to allow users to customize the layouts of data tables within Sponsor Center but was built to be deployed in any project.

  • Had to be generic and scalable enough for other teams to implement as well
  • Started – handed off to another design team – took it back later
  • Drag & Drop functionality had to be accessible

Design Audit

Description

This tool was built to allow a user to map the data in an uploaded spreadsheet with Prudential’s data points. This included various data sets, formatting of standard data types, and conversion of data values.

Challenges

  • Weeding out Pru and industry lingo in favor of common terms.
  • Simplifying multi-step process that changes based on scenario.

Design Audit

Description

Data In is a multi-functional section of the Sponsor Center portal that handles the ingestion of demographic and financial data from Prudential’s customers.

This allowed for the upload and data mapping of Excel files and the creation of payroll files by hand.

It was later expanded to allow Prudential employees the ability to assist and correct files.

Challenges

  • Restructure and combine existing workflows in a new environment.
  • Experienced users with deep history of old systems.
  • Massive amounts of data points.
  • Ingestion of data from customers in multiple formats from multiple channels.
  • No UX contact w/ users permitted.

Design Audit

Description

The Validations feature is a pre-cursor to Participant Data Corrections. It captures and displayed suspect or erroneous data coming in from payroll files. Sponsors are encouraged to fix the data in their payroll systems to avoid financial issues with their employees.

Challenges

  • Errors reported on a by-file basis, so the same error may appear multiple times.
  • Sponsors must wait for their next payroll file to see if errors are actually fixed.
  • Errors that are suspect, but correct, cannot be fixed.

Description

My primary responsibility at Netsolace was working on Edible’s in-store technology. The lynchpin of all in-store tech was the Store Management System (SMS). During my 16-months I worked on a number of feature updates and new features.

  • Interfranchise Discount Threshold
  • Order Invoice Change
  • Converted Order Invoices
  • Tokenized Card-on-File
  • Order Email Logic Change
  • Search for Gift Sentiments
  • Quickbooks Export
  • Local Database Cleanup
  • Edible-To-Go Work Ticket
  • Active Route (for delivery planning)

Challenges

  • The architecture was very old. Even a simply task like changing a button color or name could take hours of coding and testing.
  • Predefined screen dimensions, with no page scrolling.
  • Integration of entirely new order-types (to go) with a traditionally delivery-based system.
  • Inability to merge certain data types due to data architecture debt.
  • Orders keyed to data points that might change, but cannot change due to system requirements (such as email address).

Description

Designed a number of new features and upgrades to existing features of the Edible.com shopping site.

  • My Store (store locator and favorites)
  • Personalized Pages (custom offers and views based on past purchases)
  • Enhanced Encomemental Pop-up (upsell at checkout)
  • Multi-Day Surprise (schedule deliveries over a series of days)
  • Super-packages / Gift Baskets (bundle products into single-sale units)
  • My Rewards (loyalty program)

Challenges

  • Lack of data across multiple aspects of the website and loyalty programs
  • Technical debt inhibiting the merging of programs, products, or profiles
  • Two sites (desktop + mobile) instead of one responsive site
  • Accommodate schedules of various franchisee locations
  • Streamline any parts connected to checkout so as not to make the process more difficult

York & Chapel

Description

The initial intent was to design a mobile app for phones, and not worry about hand-held devices for the web. Many of the designs created for the mobile app were eventually ported, sometimes retro-fitting items already built for desktop, into the website.

Challenges

A fully-featured website, this application needed to carry lots of information and handle many features in a small space.

Description

The web application was designed mobile-first and used the Material Design system for much of its interaction. I made recommendations on break-points for both responsive and adaptive elements.

Challenges

The client originally did not want to deal with mobile for the website. Knowing that this was likely a mistake, I created my designs mobile-first. Months later when they realized their clients were looking for phone access to their platform, all of the designs were easily modified for the phone, and all of the designs were available.

Description

This learning platform comes complete with tests and quizzes. Patterns designed for mobile thru desktop included:

  • Multiple choice questions (single & multi-answered)
  • Matching
  • List Ordering

Challenges

Many of the go-to patterns for testing do not work well on a smaller screen. There isn’t much space, and click-and-drag conflicts too easily with many mobile gestures. Alternate patterns needed to be designed to account for these.

Soooo... This map is horribly out of date. I have been living in Vancouver, Washington since just before the pandemic.

I need to replace this map, but have not yet. Since I don't want to leave the spot empty, enjoy the nostalgia of my old life.
